The two main readings on a blood pressure monitor are systolic and diastolic. The diastolic number is on top while the diastolic number is on the bottom.
A 110 over 60 blood pressure reading means that your systolic is 110 and your diastolic is 60.
Blood pressure can fluctuate many times throughout the day, which is why you should check it regularly.
Is a reading of 110 over 60 considered safe? Let’s find out.
What’s the Difference Between Systolic and Diastolic?
Systolic refers to the amount of force exerted on your arteries during a heartbeat.
Diastolic is the amount of forced exerted on your arteries between each heartbeat.
A 110 over 60 blood pressure reading is generally considered safe. It’s lower than the recommended 120 over 80, so you’re fine.
Keep in mind that if your systolic goes below 90, or if your diastolic goes below 60, it could mean hypotension (low blood pressure).
What is Hypotension?
Believe it or not, hypotension can be a bad thing too. It can lead to fainting, dizziness, lightheadedness, and more.
A 110 over 60 blood pressure isn’t considered hypotensive.
It only becomes hypotension if the systolic (top) number dips below 90 or if the diastolic (bottom) number dips below 60.
It only takes one number in the low range for your blood pressure to be considered hypotensive.
For instance, if your systolic is 110, but your diastolic is 50, then your blood pressure is below normal.
Why is Hypotension Bad?
A 110 over 60 blood pressure is perfectly fine. It’s recommended that you monitor it to make sure that it doesn’t dip too low.
A drop of just 20 mm Hg- like 110 to 90, for instance- is enough to cut off blood supply to your brain.
This can cause you to faint and/or become dizzy. If the plunge is big enough, then it can become life-threatening.
Note, a 110/60 reading is also a possibility if you’ve recently donated blood. Losing a lot of blood in a short period can lower your blood pressure.
Are You an Athlete?
Most athletes have low blood pressure compared to non-athletes. In fact, it’s quite common for athletes to have a blood pressure of 110 over 60.
If you play a sport, or if you exercise daily, then this is a normal blood pressure for you.
If you’re not currently exercising, then it’s recommended that you begin as soon as possible.
Exercise is one of the best ways to lower high blood pressure, which decreases your risk for many diseases.
110 Over 60 Blood Pressure is Normal
If you have a 110 over 60 blood pressure reading, congratulations! It means that you’re healthy.
We recommend buying a blood pressure monitor to check it from time to time. Most monitors are quite cheap ($25-$50) and are easy to use.
If your 110 over 60 blood pressure reading begins to dip too low, then it might be time to see a doctor.
In the meantime, enjoy your safe blood pressure and good health.
